Mold And Black Mold Removal

Stachy is commonly found indoors as it colonizes on wet, water damaged cellulose building materials (commonly the paper on dry wall or gypsum board and paper facing on fiberglass insulation). Stachybotrys exposure is suspected to be a contributing factor in serious illnesses, some of which have resulted in death. However, the hypotheses that point to Stachybotrys as being the culprit in many cases have been difficult to prove since other molds, such as Aspergillus and Penicillium types, were often present along with the Stachybotrys mold. These other molds can also produce mycotoxins and have been associated with illnesses such as Aspergillosis, which is a respiratory illness. Are all black molds Stachybotrys, or toxigenic? The answer is NO! At SANAIR IAQ we are consulted to assess the black mold found indoors, but more often than not the black mold we find IS NOT Stachybotrys. How can this be? We have been told for many years about this silent invader, Black, Toxic, Killer Mold; Stachybotrys. In the Hampton Roads, Tidewater Region of Virginia (Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport News, and Williamsburg) the most common fungus we encounter, during a mold inspection, mold cleanup, or air system cleaning is Cladosporium. Cladosporium is not considered to be a toxigenic mold, but its presence within a home or office often generates concern with occupants because it is often black in color. The fact of the matter is that there are over approximately one hundred thousand (100,000) species of molds and, of all these fungal species, over approximately one half of them (more than 50,000 species) can be black in color. So what does this tell us about mold identification in the field? It tells us that we cannot identify a mold without using proper sample collection practices, along with laboratory analysis and identification, performed by an AIHA accredited laboratory. There is significant portion of the population that sees a black colored mold and believes they are looking at a toxigenic mold, Stachybotrys. This lack of understanding along with emboldened media headlines often stating Black Mold Killer Mold, etc.

[5] [ unreliable medical source? ] The controversy began in the early 1990s after analysis of two infantile deaths and multiple cases in children from the poor areas of Cleveland, Ohio due to pulmonary hemorrhage were initially linked to exposure to heavy amounts of Stachybotrys chartarum . Subsequent and extensive reanalysis of the cases by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have failed to find any link between the deaths and the mold exposure. Black Toxic Mold (Stachybotrys) Symptoms, Mycotoxins & Treatment

| Sanair IAQ Danny Dangerfield - Tuesday, April 23, 2013 Black Mold is a term that was coined a number of years ago to describe Stachybotrys Chartarum. Stachybotrys is considered a toxigenic mold that produces mycotoxins. Stachy is commonly found indoors as it colonizes on wet, water damaged cellulose building materials (commonly the paper on dry wall or gypsum board and paper facing on fiberglass insulation). Wake Up and Work » Black Mold Can Cause Severe Health Problems

Namely, the fact that there isn't much when it comes to African-American males, a troubling fact for one of the state's most elite institutions. A group of students, led by Sy Stokes, posted a video voicing their concerns about the number of black students on campus, and their message is hard to ignore. Stokes, a third-year Afro-American studies student who identifies as black, Cherokee and Chinese , recites a spoken word poem in the video, citing blaring statistics about the university's diversity issue. According to the school's enrollment statistics , African-Americans make up 3.8 percent of the student population. In the video, Stokes points out that black males make up 3.3 percent of the male student population, and that 65 percent of those black males are undergraduate athletes. Of the incoming men in the freshmen class, only 1.9 percent of them were black. In an interview with the Daily Bruin , Stokes said he almost dropped out of UCLA during his first year because he felt isolated and uncomfortable. Although he eventually found his niche in the minority community, he said he wanted to raise awareness about the school's lack of diversity before the university's application deadline on Nov. 30. We had to do something to put our issues on the map, Stokes said. In an email statement to the school paper, Janina Montero, vice chancellor of student affairs, said administrators acknowledge the need for more diversity and are attempting to work within the state's admission parameters. We certainly recognize that the low numbers of African Americans and other underrepresented students on campus does lead to a sense of isolation and invisibility, Montero said in her email statement. It is difficult to eliminate this painful imbalance without considering race in the admissions process. The state of California voted down affirmative action in 1996 and passed Proposition 209, which banned state schools from considering race, gender, ethnicity or national origins in their admissions processes. Black student enrollment has severely decreased since that provision and critics are saying that has to change. The students' video adds to the ongoing affirmative action debate both inside and outside of the state, raising awareness about diversity at institutions around the country. Stokes said he feels responsible for spreading the word about the unknown challenges of being a minority student at UCLA and the ongoing lack of diversity on campus. "Being the cousin of Arthur Ashe, I feel as though it is my responsibility to uphold the strong voices of the Black Bruin community," he said.

I didn't think anything of it at the time, but now I am positive there is a mold problem. My cats eyes seem more red than usual, and he threw up today (a very large pile) and he made absolutely no sound when it came up. I looked at him, looked away, looked back, and the cat vomit was there. Also, when I changed my cats litter box today, I noticed that there was only one little poop and the rest was just urine and the litter hasnt been changed since Saturday night. I have scrubbed the visible suspected mold patches off the windows which is all I can do until someone comes to address the problem. My landlords have been ignoring my calls, so I have to wait until the morning with hopes the rental man will come and have someone confirm my suspicions. I am calling the vet first thing in the morning to ask what my best option is, but I have absolutely no cash to pay for anything. I'm hoping I'm just over reacting, but I read up on cats and mold exposure, and I have been just sick ever since. I have attached a picture of him from when I first got my precious cat. I took him in off the street after I found him in my back yard crying and he followed me in. I just wonder if these symptoms could be anything else? ANSWER Lethargy is one of the signs of almost every cat illness there is, and my recommendation would be to call your veterinarian for advice. In this particular case, the lethargy you are witnessing in your cat could point to mold, but it could point to a number of other feline illnesses. Finding less stool in the cat litter box than you usually would find could be a sign that your cat has constipation. Feline constipation is a problem for many cats, and may also be the cause of the lethargy you are seeing. On the other hand, the lack of stool could be due to not eating well.

Symptoms of Mold Exposure in Cats

Once it reaches a certain stage, it casts off spores which can be inhaled, eaten, or even absorbed directly through the skin. It is for this reason that many houses that have flood damage are condemned and made unlivable by the government until the mold can be removed. The major health effects of black mold generally result from fluid buildup in the lungs that leads to pneumonia. Pneumonia is an inflammation or infection in the lungs that causes the alveoli, or small sacs, to become filled with fluids, usually pus. When black mold spores get into the lungs through inhalation, the body mounts an immune response, and part of that response involves diluting the spores with water. This is what leads to the formation of the pus that fills the alveoli and causes the pneumonia. Another very common health problem associate with black mold is with the upper respiratory tract. Black mold, because of its structure, sticks to the mucus membrane of the nose and sinus cavities and causes an immune response there. The symptoms when this happens will mimic the common cold, but will progressively get worse unless the individual is removed from the environment. Over weeks, these will progress and will lead to symptoms like dehydration, headaches and nausea along with the URI symptoms of a runny nose and cough. Black mold has also been found to be extremely dangerous to babies, and produces a condition called Infant Pulmonary Hemorrhaging. In this condition, the lining of the lungs becomes so irritated by the presence of black mold, that ulcers develop that bleed into the lungs. This results in conditions similar to pneumonia and ultimately leads to the death of the child. Health problems related to black mold are easily prevented by making sure your home and workspace is free from the environment necessary to breed black mold. This includes making sure your basement is well ventilated and dry. It may be necessary to place a dehumidifier in the basement to make sure any excess groundwater does not feed the mold. It is also necessary to make sure any rugs and carpeting are completely dry before being placed back in the house, this includes after a water accident or flood, or with normal washing.
